Some pictures from a solo bicycle trip through Central America, February-March 2005.
I was a Peace Corps Volunteer in Quezaltepeque, Chiquimula, Guatemala in the early 1980s. I revisited the area on the bike trip.
Several men repairing a pot used for boiling sugar cane down to cachaza, sugar cane juice. This is about an hour's ride up into the hills on a dirt road. The guy in the middle, hidden by the pot, is my friend and former coworker, Rogelio. He's not wearing any pants.
My house in Quezaltepeque, Guatemala. When I lived there 20 years ago, there was a vacant lot next door and the street was unpaved. There was also a dead oppossum in the street, which I left there after an epic battle. I guess somebody took it.
The street I lived on, with "new" paving and electrical wiring. The clouds have shifted position since I lived there, too.
Doña Mina, my mom-away-from-home when I lived in Quezaltepeque.
Downtown Quezaltepeque, now a bustling a prosperous little town. The Catholic church is no longer the tallest structure in town, now that the cell phone tower (seen rising behind it) was built. I don't know if the tower interferes with prayer transmission from the church, but there sure are a lot of evangélicos in town these days.
