Thirty years ago, the town of San Juan Bautista was a fairly
isolated ranching village, but with
the inexorable expansion of Silicon Valley, it's now barely out of
commuting range. Still, the
area retains a largely rural feel, as this photo of the road over
the mountains to Monterey shows.
The photo also shows the bank of freezing-cold fog awaiting any
cyclist who turns down the chance
of a summer holiday in, say, Libya.
