A trip across the Gavilan mountains takes you from the fancy,
upscale town and mission of
Carmel to the decidedly lower-key Mission Nuestra SeƱora de
Soledad. "Soledad" can be translated
either as "solitude" or "loneliness," and either one is apt for
this mission, which was one of the
most remote of the missions, and certainly the least
successful. It fell into disrepair early on, and
its present restored state is probably the best it's ever looked.
Slated to become a Walmart in 2019.
