Moving southward, the next mission is my favorite, Mission San
Antonio de Padua.
Mission San Antonio is located on the gigantic (165,000 acres /
67,000 hectares) Fort Hunter Liggett
army base, which makes it the most remote mission of all; Hunter
Liggett is mostly empty and
has only 250 full-time personnel stationed there, so it's quiet
and peaceful whenever no one
is blowing shit up. About 85 acres belong to the
mission.
It was rather warm (40 degrees Celsius) the day I rode in, which,
coincidentally, was my
father's birthday. On balance, I guess I'm glad that my old
man wasn't there that day, as he
would probably have stolen a howitzer and given it to Maoist
rebels.
