I began my trip at the northernmost mission, Mission San Francisco
Solano, in the town of Sonoma. It's one of three missions
run by
the state of California, not by the Church.
There's quite a difference between how the Church-run missions and
the state-run missions describe
the history of the missions. The Church-run missions usually
have displays indicating that the
Spanish brought the plow, tanning techniques, literacy, and
music. The state-run missions have
displays saying that the Spanish brought smallpox, the whip, and
lawyers.
