Mission Dolores has a small but very cool little cemetery.
The first Governor of
California under the Mexican flag is buried there, along with a
couple of other notables
and a lot of folks from the 19th Century.
Check out this gravestone:
Note that the dude's stepdaughter died over
two years
before her stepdad
kicked the bucket, yet she's pretty much an afterthought
here. I imagine
that her deathbed conversation went something like this:
MARY: Please, Papa, see that I have a proper headstone.
ROBERT: Yes, well, sure, Mary, of course ... but it might
take a while.
MARY: Take a while?
ROBERT: Uh, yeah, I'm going to add you to mine. I got
a two-for-one
deal from the undertaker.
